My Source Web Conferences

My Source Web conferences are designed to give stations the tools and guidance to execute a successful My Source effort. This curriculum will provide the same expert training featured in the regional workshops but is open to any public broadcasting station. Live webinars will be held in July and August and the recordings will be available through September, 2008. Each 90-minute conference module will be repeated to allow for different schedules and time zones.

Register here: http://mysource.webex.com.

See descriptions of the training modules here.

My Source Highlights: APT and WQLN Public Radio

Alabama Public Television (APT) produced a memoriable on-air spot that features a mom's story about her daughter with autism. The girl made a language break-through by watching children's programs on APT and mimicking the funder tags.

The audio clip from WQLN Radio in Erie, PA has a lot of punch for a 30-second spot. In it, we hear a listener's appreciation for the local world music show followed by a request for others to submit their My Source stories.

Visit the NCO site to see and hear their good work.

Join the Discussion: Outreach and Community Engagement Audio Call

Does your station do outreach or community engagement? Is there a difference? Does it really matter? Share your opinions about these questions and others during our audio call "From Outreach to Community Engagement" on July 31 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Guest participants will start the conversation by talking about their own stations, but most of the call will be spent in open discussion. All are invited to participate.

Register at nco@ncoengage.org.

Tools to Help You Know Your Community

Discussions between public broadcasting stations and their communities are win-wins for all involved. Station staff gain important community knowledge and citizens get to voice their opinions and be acknowledged. For many stations, the rewards are significant enough that ongoing, planned dialogues are key components of their annual strategic goals.

Use these online tools to help your station initiate community discussions or strengthen ones you already implement. The tools are gathered from different sources, including The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, an organization NCO has collaborated with to help stations become more embedded in their communities.

Talk With Your Peers: Dialogue Groups Now Forming

Want to brainstorm ideas, talk about hot topics and improve your engagement practices? Join a Peer-to-peer Dialog Group and do all this without even stepping on a plane. We're organizing groups for ongoing online and over-the-phone discussions. Groups are forming around the signature issues of health, education, connecting diverse communities, economics/financial literacy and environment.

The first two groups will focus on health and environment and will kick-off with audio calls. We expect the other groups to begin in September.

  • Health Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Group will meet Wednesday Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. ET via audio call
  • Environment Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Group will meet, Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. ET via audio call

Educational Resources for Ken Burns's THE WAR On iTunes U

To help educators gear up for the new school year, WETA is providing film clips and lesson plans from THE WAR to any educator with access to iTunes. The free resources are part of iTunes U, a section of the iTunes Store to which PBS, KQED, WGBH, WNET 13 and WETA contribute. iTunes makes this large body of resources easily accessible. Take a look.
